As the time came for me to think about my specific SIP topic I immediately went to my volleyball coach, Jeanne Hess, to see if there was a way that I could turn my interest in volleyball stats into a SIP project. Coach Hess got in contact with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and was able to find a wonderful topic for me. The AVCA wanted me to look into finding a mathematical alternative for the Coaches Poll. When I found out that I would be able to do my SIP on volleyball statistics I was ecstatic with the opportunity to research a topic that I had such an interest in. Each week rankings are posted for all three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) divisions, displaying what are considered to be the top 25 teams at the time, ranked by the coaches’ votes of each division (AVCA, “AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll."). As an avid follower of volleyball statistics I was constantly checking these weekly rankings and wondering where they came from.
