Abstract
Beer has been produced since the dawn of civilization, however, it has not been until the last century that beer has come under the watchful eye of science. Quality control is one of the most important aspects of any product, but beer especially due to its fickle nature. In this area, previous research has proven invaluable in creating a product of a higher quality and consistency than ever before. Beginning with the raw materials and moving through the brewing process, quality control is important at every step. Tests range from using UV/Vis spectroscopy to determine color and bitterness, to simple analytical methods that help the brewer determine adjustments that need to be made during the brewing process. With the advancements of quality control methods and analysis, the modern brewer is moving away from the artisan of old and is now required to become a scientist.
