Silver, Gold, and Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles Functionalized with Ampicillin against Various Bacterial Strains

This study investigates the ability of several nanoparticles functionalized with ampicillin to destroy various bacterial stains, including some that are ampicillin resistant. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP), gold nanoparticles (AuNP), and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiOzNP) were functionalized with ampicillin in a colloidal solution. Bacterial strains were treated with given functionalized nanoparticles, placed in growth conditions, and the resulting bacterial colonies were counted via plating. This study shows that AgNP themselves are antibacterial, while AuNP and TiOzNP are not. However !\uNP, when functionalized with ampicillin (AuNP-AMP) were effective at destroying all bacterial strains tested. AgNP when functionalized with ampicillin (AgNP-AMP) have a greater bactericidal potency than AgNP alone. TiOzNP functionalized with ampicillin (TiOzNP-AMP) were not antimicrobial, but further tests are needed to confirm this.
