An Interesting Green Solution: The Suspected Rearrangement of N,N' -dimethyltribenzo- 1,4, 7 -triazacyclononane through Oxidation by Copper(II)
This project attempted to complex the macrocyclic ligands, N,N'dimethyltribenzo- 1,4, 7 -triazacyclononane, MezN3-CTV, and N,N',N"trimethyltribenzo- 1,4, 7 -triazacyclononane, Me3N3-CTV with transition metal cations along with reproducing the results from Ross Beattie's organic radical formation reaction. These goals were never accomplished although an interesting result was produced. The reaction of MezN3-CTV and CuBrz, the attempted reproduction of Ross Beattie's reaction, produced a deep green solution containing an unidentified product and precipitated a brown solid. The characterization was attempted through UV/Vis, IR, and EPR spectroscopy, but no structure was determined. X-Ray crystallography is crucial for the identification of this product. It is suspected that a rearrangement of the organic macrocyclic reactant occurred.
