The Motor of Campus: Roles and Perspectives of Facilities Management Employees at Kalamazoo College
Abstract
Facilities Management is the backbone of Kalamazoo College. The employees
who work in this department maintain and improve the college everyday. Without these
employees the college would simply not be able to function. In my own experiences prior
to this summer, I rarely interacted with Facilities Management employees. In an effort to
combine my academic interests in Sociology and my curiosity about the ongoing life of
the college and who makes it function, I embarked on this project. Based on my
reflections from working full-time at Facilities Management in the summer of 2012, this
paper examines several different themes that exist and are prevalent in how Facilities
Management operates.
