dc.description.abstractThis literature review seeks to investigate how parental styles influence self-esteem, and mental well-being of adolescents in different cultures. Self-esteem is important because it controls the emotional state and function of the individual. Self-esteem is dominant and vital in an adolescent’s development and parental styles is one of the predictors of either high or low self-esteem. Baumrind (1991) identified four parental styles; Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive/Indulgent, and Neglectful parenting and the findings suggest that parents from Individualist cultures use these parental styles when parenting their children. The parental style widely preferred in collectivist cultures usually entails more demand and control. This study also examines how parenting affects other areas of adolescents well-being such as depression or problem behaviors.en_US
