Social Hierarchies Within the Tattoo Community
MetadataShow full item record
My project is to investigate to what extent and how the stigma that has historically surrounded tattoos has changed and whether it manifests itself in different ways depending on a tattooee’s position in society. I aim to explore: 1. How social hierarchies function within the community of tattooed people. 2. To what extent stigmatization is dependent on a tattooee’s race/ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender. I’ll make a case for the broadened appeal of tattooing today and consider how this may change the position of tattooing in U.S. mainstream society as well as the experience of stigmatization by tattooed people. Over the course of this research, I’ve discovered that social hierarchies within the tattoo community reflect and reproduce social hierarchies in society at large.
