Abstract
Flamenco, a form of song and dance, has often been understood and promoted as a symbol for the nation of Spain. Common representations of flamenco are largely uniform, suggesting flamenco participants and experience are unvaried, as well. Flamenco, however, engages a wide and diverse range of participants. My research is concerned with exploring the ways in which flamenco performance embodies as well as comments upon Spain’s complexities, nuances, and contradictions. Field observations and semi-structured interviews exhibit the dynamic relationship between flamenco performance and Spanish national identity.
