Economics provides a valuable and necessary way to assess the impact of trees in our society. The real challenge to environmental economics is framing these values in the right way so that they are easily understood by the general population. Barriers of language and units of measurement often get in the way. Sometimes they actually prevent us from finding unified values for trees. Talking with school aged children about the environment is particularly difficult, but, with the right field tested methodology, it can be done. If we start educating future generations early, we can make great strides in improving or reversing environmental degradation, particularly when it comes to trees.
