Web-Based Weight Management Programs as a Solution to Growing Obesity in America
Abstract
Today, roughly two-thirds of the United States population is overweight or obese. This can lead to serious health concerns in addition to taking a significant toll on our country's economy .Using journal sources, first-hand experiences and personal interviews with experienced health care professionals, this paper looks into the issue of obesity; under-diagnosis of obesity by doctors and corruption of certain government organizations. The current action taken by the government of the State of Michigan; Rick Snyder's "4x4 Plan," is also examined and analyzed. Web-based weight management websites could be the solution to the health crisis in our country by encouraging people to take control of their own health and thereby reducing the extreme obesity rates. Because of the nature of the Internet, web-based programs are available to large populations for a low-cost, and can be interactive and convenient for people wanting to lose weight or practice good health. With a healthier population and lower obesity rates, expenditures spent on caring for obesity-related health issues would be reduced, putting less strain on the our already struggling economy.
