My art in basic terms, is about mastering a medium, oil pastels and oil paint, color and the human form. My ambition to strive for realism is born from a love for observation; the focus required of the mind to digest all that is before my eyes. It is also partly a faith in believing that if I look at something long enough and with enough sensitivity, I will learn the nature of my subject as it reveals itself to me. Working towards realism for me is not to record like a photograph as if a strong likeness to the subject is an indication of quality, rather I see it as it is a proficiency in a skill that is an important mean to an end. In regard to realism I seek to portray a presence, mood or thought with a sense of physicality or sensuousness. Working on a large scale is one way of making a physical impression as well as a being practical with consideration to the medium. In addition, I prefer to be generous in the application of paint and pastel believing that to strengthen the feeling given by the art. Working with a professional artist whom I admire forced me to reach new levels in my own art including an unrealistic desire to equal her work. Naturally this resulted in some frustration not to mention the unspoken expectations of Kalamazoo College. These aspects proved to be the biggest obstacle I experienced during the time spent working on my S.I.P. I can't help but wonder if I would have felt less blocked and more free in my expression had the circumstances been different. Aside from these setbacks I feel I have realized the most fundamental expectation I imposed upon my self and that was to devote more of myself to art than ever before.
