Abstract
The class in street theatre at Kalamazoo College
during the summer of 1970 instilled considerable enthusiasm
in Kathy Hall and myself. Through our foreign
study experiences in Spain, both of us ·had become familiar with Spanish theatre, and felt that street theatre
would have a definite potential there, where this art
form is generally confined to the cities. We felt that
performing street theatre in the "pueblos" would be an
exciting experience both for actors and audience.
After consulting with Mrs. Nelda Balch and Mr.
Clair Myers of the theatre department, and with Dr.
Alfonsa Urtiaga, professor of Spanish, we·decided that
we would prepare Schumann's "King's Story" that we had
learned during the summer from two members of The Bread
and Puppet Theatre and also another play, more universal
in nature, dealing with Spanish legends. Our intent was
to travel to pueblos on the day of their "fiesta" (nearly
all Spanish towns have a special date which is set aside
t!o pay homage to their patron saint, celebrating with
feasts and dancing, etc.) and perform these plays
wherever there were people. By changing names and adjusting
a few facts, we could make the legend play coincide
with the particular pueblo and the story of its
patron saint.
Our plan, from the very beginning, was to perform
these plays in Spanish. Since Kathy is a Spanish major,
and I a minor, we felt that this could be more than
adequately done, even if we were to employ K students
in the Madrid foreign study program; there would be no
spoken dialogue, only a narrator, Kathy.
