Abstract
The specific matter I will be covering in relation to the subject will be a brief ' overview of "devised" theatre history, focusing on how it led to the current manifestations that I have focused on within this body of work, as well as my own attempts towards a definition, if only for the sake of clarity within this project. This will be followed by a case study of my own experiences within a contemporary devised theatre company's (Pig Iron Theatre) training program. The program's exercises were based primarily out of Jacque LeCoq's rehearsal tools and commedia traditions, and supplemented by sentiments from various company members on their own philosophies about the goal of devised theatre. This will lead to the final portion of the work, an index featuring a comprehensive list of theatre companies in America from all regions who are, at the time of this writing, pursuing ideals and methodologies similar to those outlined in the first two portions of this work. Also provided are their unique visions, methods; notable productions and contact information. Overall, I hope this will serve as a strong aid for the theatre arts student interested in this pioneering form of theatre and may wish to pursue this form in some capacity in his or her professional lives following graduation.
