A director and, in tern, the director's art, is incredibly dependent on the artistic community of those that surround him or her- that is the actor, the playwright, and the designers. The Director's role is unique, frustrating, and ultimately incredibly rich as a result of the necessity for collaboration. As a young director it is difficult, in this given environment, to discover where your work begins and ends and what you leave to the other artists. This is part of the reason I chose to attend the La MaMa International director's symposium- to observe how directors, at different points in their careers, defined their job.
