Abstract
As a student of theatre who possesses a strong background in music I have found myself increasingly interested in the intersection of these two art forms. My academic career at Kalamazoo College has fostered in me a curiosity and enthusiasm for theatre that has allowed me to discover new things about myself as well as teach me how to view the world in a different manner. As an actor who possesses a strong affinity for musical theatre, on frequent occasions I have experienced how many people associate this specific form of theatre with negative images and off-putting stereotypes. The genre of musical theatre is often parodied and satirized as musical theatre has the stigma of being overacted, forced, and outrageous. The main criticisms are song styles and "unreasonable" spontaneity of song or a lack of connection between lyrics and music. In an effort to challenge these misconceptions as well as take an in depth look at all production aspects of producing a show; I undertook the role of co-director and actor in The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown.
