The blank page. A clean sheet of Arches 140 lb. rough watercolor paper. What does this represent? Does it represent a new idea, a fresh start, a new image? Is it a new endeavor leading to a new statement? Is it worth it to paint, is this a valid craft? What are the limitations to artistic expression, what are the confines in which one works? Why do I paint? These are some of the questions that went through my mind during my ten week SIP in Denver, Colorado. My SIP began as an independent study in watercolor painting, with a particular emphasis on scenic rendering, an element which was there since my specialty in theatre is design. From the start of my project to the finish, my attitude about painting in general and why I paint ranged from a vague notion that it was something that I was obligated to do, to a clear understanding of the process and its purpose within my own context. Future painting and other future artistic endeavors, especially within the theatre, since this is at present my direction of interest, certainly shall be influenced and enhanced by the thoughts that I've had and the decisions that I've made about painting on the blank page.en_US
