The technical director in today's theatre world needs to be a true jack of all trades. A good technical director is well equipped with organizational skills, communication skills, and talents in carpentry, rigging, lighting, sound, and props. The technical director is needed during every aspect of a production, from the first drafts to the final strike. A technical director may be found working on any single project or even on every single project, depending on the size of the crew and the difficulty of the projects involved. Depending on the size and needs of the company, the technical director may act solely as a master craftsman, assisting in construction and facilitating the technical schedule's punctual completion. In other situations, the technical director barely does any physical construction himself and instead concentrates on the organization and timing of construction. This is necessary when productions begin to get complex. The experience of technical directing here at Kalamazoo College taught me more about myself than I would have originally thought possible. Working closely with the shop staff made me realize how important a leader is to the crew. When the responsible party arrives and gives encouragement in the right places, amazing things can be accomplished. Being there with others also showed me that I truly do love to teach. Giving back to the scene shop what it taught me has been a rewarding experience in and of itself.en_US
