Catch-86: An Experiment in Theatrical Journalism
MetadataShow full item record
My main intention is to create a performance piece, what I am calling a "Human Portrait", and not necessarily a play. Catch-86 takes on more of a documentary quality, rather than more traditional dramatic plot structure. The spirit of my process might be analogous to that of Anna Deveare Smith. Though her plays provide a spark of inspiration, I am not over-zealously equating Catch-86 to her work. What I have done is and will be specific to me, and my creative process. What I have accomplished is as much for my own individual growth as for the good of outside communities. Even though slides and video are used during the performance, even though there is no particularly conventional plot line structure, even though my creative license could be blamed for portrayal of a suggestive truth, I hope that I have achieved at least one thing: The sense of a single story being told -the story of the human condition. That, to me, is what theatre is all about, and why we, as humans, continue to create it, and to create the need for it.
