Abstract
The goal of my Senior Independent Project at the Magic
Theater was to broaden my practical experience of directors and
directing through the observation of a director at work and
participation in a professional production. As I planned, and still
plan, to continue in my education and experience as a director, this
kind of active learning is invaluable. In the following pages, I will
describe the specifics of my involvement in a professional theatre
production of Jaques and His Master by Milan Kundera, as adapted
from Denis Diderot's Jaques le Fataliste et son Maitre; an analysis of
the director, Harvey Seifter, and his particular directing style,
identifying the aspects of the production that went well and those
that didn't; and, finally, how these observations apply to a broader
picture of the director and their work.
