Abstract
During my three months at About Face, I wanted to discover what it truly
means for me to be a queer theatre artist, what it means to others, and what it means to
be a queer theatre today. I had discussions with many of coworkers, some of which
were. recorded, about these questions and pressed myself to consider my, and the
theatre's, experiences more critically. The answers would have come one way or
another, but as both the theatre and I found ourselves on uncertain ground,
introspection became more relevant than it had been previously. These kinds of
discussions took the spotlight, as a matter of necessity. We could not step forward until
we realized where we were standing. At the precipice of great change and transition,
About Face has been charged with revisioning itself in a fight to remain both
financially and artistically vital. The queer artists who are members of the About Face
family, in order to improve and sustain this inimitable organization, must place
themselves in the organization and the organization's place in the theatrical and queer
community, and from that point find the best way forward.
