This SIP came about as a way to synthesize several of my interests into one project I would enjoy immersing myself in for six months. For many years, I have been fascinated by the Spanish language and culture. Spanish classes gave me a chance to explore the wide and varied literature written in Castillian, and trips to Spain had left me with an impression of a rich and ancient culture still thriving today. I already planned on doing an extended-term foreign study in Caceres, Spain, and I decided to try to incorporate work done in Spain into my SIP. At the same time, I thought it would be interesting to try and contrast Spain with a Latin American country with an entirely different literary and cultural history. Finally, I hoped to work with photography, one of my passions. I thought a project with the scope and duration of a SIP would not only truly challenge any photographic abilities I already had, but would allow me to develop new printing techniques and expand my knowledge of other aspects of photography. After much thought and several unsuccessful proposals, I decided to interpret literature through photography, both in Spain and in a Latin American country, and to compile the poems and photographs into a book. Originally I wanted to split the credits between the Spanish and Art departments, but this project did not fall under the Spanish department's guideline for a SIP. It became, therefore, a two-credit Art SIP.en_US
