I wanted to visually represent the idea of documentation, but more of memory through installation and the manipulation of place. The consciousness of how we keep tangible objects, order images in our memory, and face that which we have already experienced has interested me, and in essence this is the conceptual idea behind this work and may be easier to explain through the metaphors and visual presences presented in the actual installation. I chose to work within the framework of 70 days in Nairobi, Kenya. The actual, tangible documentation or material used in the display comes from the creative minds and actions of many young people on the streets in Nairobi city center and my own journal keeping, observations, and art work during this time. I wanted to return to Nairobi, after having come back from foreign study for three basic reasons. The hardness and challenging situation of Nairobi or any unfamiliar place causes for a certain freshness of ideas. I feel that by returning to Nairobi, I was able to push myself back into this uncomfortable situation and continue, in a way, the ideas and strains of thought that are currently happening in my work. I also wanted to work with the young people, whose work takes a definite presence in the installation. Last, I feel that with the type of work I am producing, it.'s important to incorporate my influences, ideas, and emotions in an honest way, so, I needed to return, not to the time, but the place that Nairobi holds in the birth and conceptual part of this work.en_US
