This paper will evaluate the events leading up to the proposal, as well as, the arguments for and against a U.S.-Mexico FTA. By incorporating basic economic insight, this paper will demonstrate the benefits of a U.S.Mexico free trade agreement and examine the reasons why the U.S. should pursue negotiations. In addition, this paper will examine Mexico's past economic policies, as well as, the many economic reforms which have been currently initiated throughout the country. In the end, it will be clear that Mexico is now prepared, more than ever, to form such a relationship with the United States. Therefore, the United States should not delay negotiations, but rather take advantage of this unique opportunity.
