AIDS: A Disease Not a Disgrace
Abstract
During the semester, I conducted research on AIDS and worked closely
with the Wellness Center in Ann Arbor, a volunteer organization dedicated
to serving the needs of persons with AIDS (PWAs) and people who are HIV
positive. During a training session for Wellness Center volunteers, I
participated in a number of interactive exercises as well and listened to a
panel of HIV positive persons and PWAs, in an effort to familiarize the
volunteers with the issues pertaining to AIDS as well as expose us to PWAs.
One list entitled, "Helpful Tips on Peer Counseling" will be included in the
paper, interspersed with commentary and discussion about my experiences
while working with Charles. Following this list will be a section on death
and dying, specifically about Charles' death. Next I will discuss some of the
social issues that pertained to Charles' life, such as social stigma and
prejudice. In conclusion will be suggestions for social change in the future.
