Exploration and Implementation of Basic Behavior Modification Techniques with Multi-Handicapped Adolescents in a Residential Setting
Abstract
Although many hold beliefs to the contrary, Behavior Modification Theory is a very
humane and easily understood approach to behavioral change. Its techniques are open and public,
and subjects are encouraged to take part in decision-making processes. Many people also have
mistaken conceptions concerning the abilities of the multi-handicapped. Research was conducted
through observation, readings, interview sessions and practical experience, to demonstrate the
accessibility of basic Behavior Modification Theory techniques with multi-handicapped adolescents
in a residential setting. While the theory does not claim to be a panacea for solving all
behavioral problems, the implications for success in these more difficult situations are definitely
encouraging.
