The author describes her internship in Ecuador and the structure and function of the first institution for mentally retarded children in Quito, Ecuador. The agency, lnstitucion Particular de Educacion Especial y Rehabilitacion (I.P.E.E.R.), has been offering continued service since its establishment in 1971.
