Joining Japanese Family : Study of Americans Working for Japanese Company

The author presents a sociological study of Americans working in Japanese businesses and how they view Japanese society. The author interviewed 20 American employees of nine different Japanese companies in South East Michigan in order to identify and compare the values of each country. The author discusses the characteristic of “familism” found in Japanese companies that represents the homogeneous nature of Japanese society. In contrast, interest in Japanese business practices has led to Americans labeling the society itself “Japan, Inc.” The author discusses how these cultural differences impact Americans and Japanese working together.
