500 Years of Conquest : An Analysis of Indigenous Cultural Loss and Methods of Resistance in Guatemala

Abstract

The author reviews the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the subsequent displacement and exploitation of indigenous people as the economy shifted to large plantations for coffee and other agricultural commodities, and then discusses recent efforts of indigenous people to maintain their culture and villages and resist violence from the military government of the country.
