Dreams, Drugs, and Dissatisfaction: Problems of Sustainability in Hippie Communes

Abstract

My main purpose of this project is to determine what creates and hinders stability in a commune. My methodology entails looking at the 60s communes and their raisons d'etre, and discussing the main reasons so many of them failed. I will also examine communes that have existed since the 60s to see how they have evolved and adjusted. Finally I will look at the current scene of intentional communities and discuss the differences in the attitudes of contemporary communards versus their 60s counterparts.
