Abstract
The structure of this Senior Individualized Project reflects my goals in writing it
after having answered many of my personal questions. First, it is an opportunity to
consolidate, for myself, what I have learned so that I will have more organized knowledge
of my findings. Secondly, I want the project to be beneficial information for anyone who reads it. With this in mind, I intend to present and analyze two models for addressing the
situation of homelessness in the United States, those of Peter Rossi and Joel Blau. First, I
will present several portraits of the current homeless lifestyle, in an effort to portray an
accurate picture of the homeless experience, and also to retain a human aspect to an
academic discussion of a social problem. Turning to Rossi and Blau, I will then explain
the approaches described in their books: Rossi's Down and Out in America: The Origins
of Homelessness, and Blau's The Visible Poor: Homelessness in the United States.
Finally, I will explain my ideas on the most feasible and practical model I can imagine,
given my experiences and research; I will also present the ideas of two other scholars,
Ralph DaCosta Nunez and Jonathan Freedman, who had an influence upon my model.
