Abstract
Systems of care for people with developmental disabilities exist in every culture.
There are a variety of systems and they reflect the values of the culture where they exist.
This paper explores four important areas regarding how people are cared for cross-culturally.
First, it defines "developmentally disability" in the U.S., South Africa,
Botswana and China. Second, it explains how developmentally disabled people are
viewed in these four countries. Third, it describes the care that a developmentally
disabled person receives in his/her culture. And finally it discusses and analyzes the
similarities and differences between the services within the cultures and make
connections between these. The author will focus on the cultures of the U.S. (particularly
the state of Vermont), South Africa, Botswana and China.
