Through the examination of the history of the Iberian Peninsula until the time of the Roman Empire, including themes such as art produced there, the indigenous people, and the foreigners who colonized the peninsula, this thesis looks at the factors involved in influencing the production of mosaics on the peninsula. An art brought mainly there by the Romans, the mosaics show several main decorations and motifs. How the Romans incorporated the provinces of Spain and Portugal into their Empire affected the history of art and culture on the peninsula greatly. This thesis examines the diffusion of the art of the mosaic and how the spread of such an art form depicts the interests of the people it affects.
