Abstract
This paper explores the personal experiences of young Sudanese natives as
refugees in East Africa and their subsequent experiences upon resettling in the United
States. It specifically examines the extent to which their lives as refugees shaped their
transitions to American society and culture. The life stories that are explored in this
paper record the struggles that the refugees have faced in the process of resettling and
adapting into the United States. The paper addresses the refugees' differing degrees of
successful adaptation and identifies issues that account for such variation.
