Abstract
This study examines why members of a Latino population chose to identify as they did and how
that might be a reflection of participants' experiences in Columbus, Ohio or the US more
generally. The literature surrounding identity formation, immigration, acculturation and New
Destinations will be explored. The research was conducted in Columbus with a sample of fifteen
Latinos living and working in the city all of whom participated in open-ended interviews. The
research found that one's relationship with the US and his/her country of origin played a
significant role in the individual's language use in regards to ethnicity. Through the examination
of the literature and the results of the interviews, this study concludes that New Destination cities
further migrants' identity formation by allowing them the freedom to transform their self conceptions.
This study looks at how this came to be and the effects it has on this New
Destination migrant population.
