Feminist Theory and the Dynamic of an All Female Staff At a Domestic Violence Shelter

While interning at a domestic violence shelter in the suburbs of Chicago in the summer of 2006 I got to know the staff that worked there. Before starting the internship I had this pre-conceived notion that the all female staff would be passionate feminists. Through casual conversations with them I discovered that not every one of them identified as a feminist. Also, their relationships with each other were sometimes rocky. Furthermore, there was sometimes a power struggle amongst the staff which struck me as a contradiction to what I know about feminist theory. Through spending more time there I decided that I wanted to research feminist theory and how it applies to the dynamic of an all female staff of a domestic violence shelter.
