Opportunity International: Exploring the Role of Faith in a Faith-Based Non Profit Organization

Using Opportunity International as a case study, my Senior Individualized Project examines the layered identity of this non-denominational, ecumenical, Christian, international micro finance, non profit organization. Each piece of this complex identity greatly influences the operations of and interactions within Opportunity International, making it distinct. The question my research attempts to ask is: Given the various components of the organizational structure of Opportunity International how is its faith based nature manifested in daily interactions with clients, donors and employees? Why, and how does faith matter - if at all? While the research conducted regarding donors and employees is based primarily on my case study with Opportunity International US, the experiences encountered by clients reflect many cultures throughout the world. Over the course of my project, I examine the role of faith and of culture, determine the challenges and prospects the organization faces, and propose suggestions for growth and change for this faith-based non profit organization, Opportunity International, and other like it.
