Feminine Ideals in Japanese Media
MetadataShow full item record
This report researches the history of influence of Japanese women's magazines. By reviewing numerous scholarly articles documenting many of the aspects of influential media, I attempt to research the events which created such a welcoming environment that has allowed Japanese women's magazines to thrive and spread there sphere of influence. I also document how magazines attract an audience by using specific words, phrases, and items that are used to attract specific target audiences and continue the rigid structures of ageism and femininity in the highly stratified Japanese social hierarchy. Through translating three different Japanese women's magazines I show how each attempt to mold their target audience into a specific ideal of femininity relative to age.
