Abstract
All organizations must have rules and regulations to define appropriate behavior. There are two opposing theories about whether punishments or rewards are more effective. Some experimenters feel that punishment is required in organizations and without it, productivity and motivation will drop. Others express an opinion that punishment can only lead to worker dissatisfaction and lower productivity. Even though punishment is seen as difficult to enforce and leads to problems, Clarian Health follows a mechanistic model, which relies on strict enforcement of policies. Many people have expressed discontent about Clarian Health's rigid application of punishment, and by moving away from the mechanistic model, workers may become more content to work there.
