Abstract
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder rates have increased dramatically in recent years. The increase in the diagnoses of ADHD has sparked debates about its clinical definition, processes for diagnosis, and the causes for the broad disorder. Research has recently concentrated on the biological causes of the disorder; however, environmental factors are definitively linked to ADHD. The present study examines the influence of environmental cues, television, upon ADHD behaviors. 300 children are presented with public programs, private programs, and a control condition to determine if television affects impulsivity and hyperactivity as measured by the time on task, and frequency of changes in tasks during an assigned play period. The play period is arranged within a structured environment and coded following the experiment. The experiment is a within group, multiple, time series design. The study will yield vital information to environmental causes of ADHD and further information on the raising techniques of children.
