The Effects of the Mother-Child Relationship on Child Care-Giving Behaviors Seen During Play

This study examined the relationship between care-giving behaviors in the pretend play of preschoolers and the attachment type they shared with their primary care givers. The attachment type of sixty-four children, between four and five years of age, and their primary care givers was determined through the Strange Situation. These children also took part in a loosely structured play situation designed to elicit care-giving behaviors. Care-giving behaviors were scored both quantitatively and qualitatively. It is hypothesized that children with type B and D attachments will both have high quantitative care-giving behavior scores when compared with attachment types A and C. However, when the qualitative aspects of care-giving behaviors are examined it is thought that type B children will score the highest and the scores of type A, C and D will resemble each other.
