Siblings are largely neglected in psychological and sociological studies of how families are affected by mental illness, despite evidence of their involvement in the life and care of their mentally ill sibling. Furthermore, much work has been done on families and schizophrenia specifically and little to none has been done on families and bipolar disorder, regardless of arguments that the symptoms of bipolar disorder are more distressing for families than the symptoms of schizophrenia. This proposed study takes a narrative approach to assess how living with and caring for siblings with bipolar disorder affects individuals.
