Language Development in Preschool Children: Interactive Reading with Parents and Children
MetadataShow full item record
This paper looks at the development of language through interactive reading in children ages two in a half to five years old. Vygotsky's ( 1962) theory or scaffolding and Bloom, Margulis, Tinker, & Fujita's ( 1996) " Model Intentionally" examination language development from a perspective of the interactionists. The interactionist perspective argues that activities where a child and parent converse positively encourages language. Much research demonstrates that interactive reading is one of the more effective activities for encouraging language development in children (Whitehurst, Falco, Lonigan, Fischel, DeBaryshe, Valdez-Menchaca, & Caufield, 1988). I also developed surveys for parents, with young children. The surveys evaluates the nature of what parents do with their children to encourage language development and vocabulary growth in their children. I found that the parents I surveyed used interactive reading to develop language and vocabulary.
