Abstract
The use of art in a stressful environment (e.g. hospital) may have positive effects on patients, visitors, and hospital staff. Patients often complain of the bare, unstimulating environment in hospital rooms. The current research is composed of two studies assessing the perceptions and effects of art (mobiles) on individuals. A small body of research exists documents design's positive effects on patient well-being. The first study is an attempt to better understand individual's perceptions of the mobiles. The hypothesis for the second study is that mobiles will significantly reduce levels of stress and anxiety, as well as enhance mood. The major findings of the two mobile studies were that the mobiles were rated as highly likable and soothing and had a significant positive effect on individuals' good moods.
