dc.description.abstractThis paper presents the findings of a research study entitled the Illusion of Truth Phenomenon. According to this phenomenon, familiar information is often perceived to be true regardless of the original validity of the information. This paper explores the expression of the Illusion of Truth Phenomenon in an elderly population, of ages 71-85. The effects of the variables of repetition and delay on the expression of the phenomenon are explored. This study demonstrated the occurrence of the Illusion of Truth Phenomenon in the elderly, and found that this effect was exaggerated with increased repetition and delay. It was found that a longer delay duration between encoding and retrieval of information exaggerated the illusion effect, and that repetition, with increased delay, further heightened this effect. The implications of this phenomenon upon consumer behavior in the elderly population are discussed.en_US
