dc.description.abstractParental involvement has been linked to academic achievement across multiple age groups, school subjects, and ethnic groups. However, researchers often disagree about the extent of the relationship between parental involvement and student academic achievement. Additionally, Latino families are often underrepresented in studies of parental involvement. To determine the nature of parent involvement on various aspects of Latino students' academic performance and engagement, data were taken from a larger longitudinal study of Latino academic performance and analyzed using a series of hierarchical linear regressions. The results suggest that within Latino populations, parental involvement influences students' academic performance, but not students' academic engagement. Parent involvement was shown to have a stronger effect on performance in language arts-related subjects than in any other subject areas. The research suggests that parental involvement benefits Latino students' academic performance, especially in reading, and that schools should make a greater effort to engage Latino parents in order to maximize the benefits of this association.en_US
