Abstract
Probation and parole are often used as means of monitoring and encouraging treatment for alcohol offenders. Recent research has identified treatment mechanisms that provide for decreased amounts of relapse and recurrent offenses, such as social support and structured therapy sessions. The present study investigated the efficacy of eight common probation conditions of alcohol offenders in Macomb County, Michigan from three different view points (offender, probation officer, and judge). A survey was conducted to determine the most beneficial and most harmful common terms of probation from all three perspectives. Results of this study show a varying opinion regarding the most beneficial and most harmful conditions of probation. In addition, the findings suggest a need for more communication between the three participant groups in order to ensure beneficial sentencing for alcohol offenders.
