Effects of Hippocampal, Amygdala, Superior Temporal Sulcul, and Temporal Lobe Volumes on Social Functioning in Children with Velocardiofacial Syndrome

Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is a relatively common genetic disorder produced by a deletion of DNA in the q 11.2 region of chromosome 22. ·It causes a wide range of symptoms in those afflicted, including physical, cognitive, and social deficits. In the present study, MRI was used to scan the brains of six children with VCFS and six controls to determine if volumetric differences existed in the amygdala, temporal lobe, superior temporal· sulcus, and hippocampus between the two groups. These volumes were then correlated with subscales of the child behavior checklist (CBCL). It was found that the VCFS group had significantly larger mean amygdala volume than controls, as well as significantly smaller mean temporal lobe, superior temporal sulcal, and right hippocampal volume. Unexpectedly, te.mporallobe and hippocampal volUme in the VCFS group correlated positively with the anxiety/depression subscale of the CBCL, and superior temporal sulcal volume correlated positively with the thought problems subscale. No other correlations were significant. These findings demonstrate specific structural deficits in the brains of people with VCFS that may be implicated in the social functioning of these individuals.
