A Qualitative Study on the Effects of Having a Child with Autism on Fathers
Previous research regarding the effects of having an autistic child includes studies focusing on the family unit, siblings, parents as a unit, and the mother. However, these studies have only gained recent popularity and many are contradictory. This proposed study will investigate the effects of having an autistic child on the father. Fathers of children with autism and fathers of normally developing children participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences, which were coded to find themes and core categories, and than compared. It is predicted that the affect of having an autistic child changes the fathers' emotions, values and priorities, beliefs, world views, and hopes for the future.
