Abstract
Empathic accuracy in young married couple dyads is explored using a combination of
valence tasks, a discrete emotion task, and physiological measurements. Approximately
50 married couples aged 25 to 40 years are to be used in this study. It is predicted that the
methods used, particularly the discrete emotion task, will lead to useful, valid results and
a more accurate understanding of emotions as complex, functional, and discrete. We
hypothesize that female gender, marital satisfaction, intelligence, and physiological
linkage will correlate positively with empathic accuracy, and that physiological arousal
and empathic accuracy will be negatively correlated.
