Second Language Acquisition through Bilingual Education and Tutoring

It is imperative that the education of the growing Hispanic population with limited English proficiency be recognized when creating curriculum and support in the classroom. Because in the United States students enter the educational setting with varied literacy in both first language and second language, a tutor can address individual needs and assist in raising literacy levels by facilitating learning on a one-to-one basis. A 3 x 2 mixed design was used to measure the effectiveness of bilingual language instruction in three programs: English immersion, bilingual education, and bilingual education with a tutor. It was predicted that students in a bilingual education program with a tutor would maintain and improve their native and English language skills as compared to their bilingual education counterparts.
